Stacking up the 2020 payments and commerce predictions Insider Intelligence got right  2020/12/29 14:09:43 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Last year, Insider Intelligence published payments and commerce predictions for 2020, reflecting our expectations for the year—and once the pandemic upended daily life and accelerated digital payments growth, we issued an update . Despite the widespread uncertainty of this year, we were still on track in three key areas. Here's what we got right about 2020: We predicted that most ultra-premium issuers would add permanent nontravel rewards—and they, alongside other issuers, did so. Credit card spending tumbled early this year after customers shifted dollars to debit to avoid debt and interest, and rewards, especially in travel and entertainment, became less appealing amid the pandemic. In response, Amex and Chase made short-term rewards changes by adding categories like grocery and streaming to try to recapture spending, leading us to expect that other premium issuers would follow suit and that these changes would last long-term. This came to pass : In addition to Amex and Chase continuing to extend new offerings multiple times, Citi accelerated the launch of new rewards for its Premier card.
