Govt OKs 13 applications for 5G trials  2021/05/04 06:53:02 Economic Times India
The government has approved 13 applications for 5G trials, which doesn’t include any involving Chinese players Huawei and ZTE, a senior government official said. “BSNL has tied up with C-DoT and Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio have tied up with other vendors including Ericsson and Nokia for trials in different regions across the country,” the official told ET.“Telcos will soon be given airwaves in the 700 Mhz band to use for trial purposes with some conditions attached,” the official added. Some of the conditions include testing use cases in rural as well as urban areas and paying special attention to security of the network, the official said. Telcos will also be warned to use the airwaves given strictly for trials and not for commercial deployment, a clause if breached will be met with serious consequences, the official said.ET had reported last year that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) last year had asked telcos to file a set of “priority vendors” for 5G trials.
Ericsson aims to make India a manufacturing hub  2021/04/25 18:35:30 Economic Times India
Ericsson would rather win in India by beating competition on the merits of its product portfolio and competitive costs than if any of its rivals is barred, president and CEO Börje Ekholm said. Speaking to ET’s Danish Khan, Ekholm said the Swedish telecom equipment maker plans to make India a global manufacturing hub by getting more of its ecosystem players to set up shop in the country. Edited excerpts: How important is India to Ericsson? We need to recognise that India is a very large telecommunication market, probably the second largest in the world. So for us, it’s a key market to be part of… But there is a need here to continue to grow capacity in 4G, based on growing and continuing data demand. What is important for us is that it actually helps us also drive future road maps, for example, on how to make the solutions more cost competitive. So for us, we are committed and will continue to invest.Do you think that India has delayed the 5G roll out?If you look globally, India is not behind.

Fresh BSNL 4G tender to keep Huawei, ZTE out  2021/04/02 21:43:48 Economic Times India
India may take its first official step to bar Chinese gear makers Huawei and ZTE from the country’s telecom networks by including a clause toward this end in an upcoming Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) equipment tender. The Centre’s Empowered Technology Group (ETG) has approved state-run BSNL’s proposal to issue a fresh tender for 57,000 4G sites. It would allow multinational vendors such as Finland’s Nokia, Sweden’s Ericsson and South Korea’s Samsung but not Huawei and ZTE, a top government official told ET.The new tender will include a clause that companies from countries having borders with India won’t be allowed to participate, thus excluding Huawei and ZTE, in line with the Centre’s policy initiative taken in the wake of India-China border standoff.“BSNL’s view was that it wants to have two tenders so that the rollout of the next generation of services can be accelerated,” said a member of the group led by principal scientific advisor K VijayRaghavan. The person didn’t want to be named.
India’s highest cyber security office sets rules to identify trusted telecom gear vendors  2021/03/28 17:39:27 Economic Times India
The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) has finalized the criteria for identifying trusted sources and products, and conveyed to the telcos and other stakeholders the process to provide information in a meeting attended by all telcos and foreign gear vendors - except China’s Huawei and ZTE.“Under the process, vendors will have to provide information to telcos, who will inform the designated authority (NCSC) about the gear and procurement. Then, the authority will inform telcos if they can procure the gear, depending on whether the vendor is marked as trusted,” a multinational vendor executive who attended the meeting told ET.NCSC, India’s highest cyber security office, shared with the stakeholders the list of products and the template of the data they will require. But the authority did not share the criteria basis which it will determine whether a source or a product is trusted, and assured the companies that all information provided will be kept in strict confidence.“They discussed how the authority will use the information to determine the trustworthiness of a vendor, as per the process.
