18 cybersecurity startups that have raised massive funding rounds recently as investors pour billions into the industry  2021/03/29 20:40:48 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Cybersecurity is blowing up as an investment sector, with 18 funding rounds of $100,000 or more since the start of 2020, amounting to more than $3.8 billion invested in all. Nothing illustrates the feeding frenzy better than two big rounds for young companies announced last week. Israeli cybersecurity startup Orca raised a $210 million Series C, scoring a $1 billion-plus valuation in just two years and dubbing itself the fastest-growing cybersecurity company ever in a press release. But before stories about Orca's meteoric rise even published, cybersecurity startup Wiz announced a $123 million round that cinched it a $1 billion valuation in just one year, racing past Orca's unicorn record. Welcome to a new era, where a formerly sleepy sector is raking in massive amounts of venture capital. According to the startup analyst firm PitchBook, there has been a greater number of $100 million cybersecurity funding rounds in the past 15 months than ever before. "Even five or six years ago there were really only a handful of multi-billion-dollar companies in cybersecurity – Checkpoint, FireEye, Palo Alto Networks — so the investor sentiment around cybersecurity was that it was an area of innovation and clearly important, but that companies can only get so big," CapitalG investor Gene Frantz told Insider.

Finland says Chinese hackers behind parliament attack  2021/03/19 16:28:00 Times of Malta
Finnish authorities said Friday they had traced a cyber attack against the country's parliament last year to a hacker group associated with the Chinese government. The Finnish parliament announced in December that it had been the target of a cyber espionage operation. The attack - which speaker of the house Anu Vehvilainen dubbed "a serious threat against our democracy and Finnish society" - had been carried out at an unspecified date "during the autumn." Finland's security service SUPO traced the attack to an actor which US security firm FireEye has designated APT31, believed to be acting at the behest of China's government. "We are quite sure of the conclusion, but unfortunately we can't comment on the methodology," a spokeswoman for SUPO told AFP in an email. SUPO also couldn't comment on what sort of information may have been compromised, as the matter was still the subject of an investigation. "We can state that the operation targeted the very heart of Finnish decision-making and is considered a very serious matter," the spokeswoman said.

Telegram or Signal? Welcome to the illusion called data security  2021/01/17 06:31:24 The Tribune
New Delhi, January 17 As millions shun WhatsApp and download new chat platforms in search for a secure experience, mind you that security is nothing but an illusion and there is no guarantee that Telegram or Signal may not be hacked in the future, especially when nation-state actors with highly sophisticated tools and huge resources are on the prowl. Encryption is fundamentally flawed and once hackers get to know any vulnerability or bug in the whole data travel journey—apps, mobile operating system, public Wi-Fi, Cloud and the physical data centres—your personal and sensitive information is always at their mercy. The Telegram development team is based in Dubai. The Telegram team had to leave Russia due to local IT regulations and has tried a number of locations as its base, including Berlin, London and Singapore. It does not store data within the boundaries of India. Signal does not own its own data centres. The company is entirely Cloud based, which puts data at risk as cyber-attacks on Cloud-based services have increased in the recent past.
