Intermodal Growth Here To Stay, Says Hub Group  2020/07/31 10:07:00 Benzinga

Intermodal Volumes Will Take Months To Improve, Panel Predicts  2020/05/20 21:04:12 Benzinga Feeds
Intermodal volumes could start to improve around the fourth quarter of 2020 or the first quarter of 2021, but uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic makes any volume forecast dicey, said a trio of panelists at Wolfe Research's Global Transportation and Industrials conference on Tuesday. "You have some really big factors that aren't normal items," and it's not just an economic issue but a biological one, said Jim Filter, Schneider National (NYSE: SNDR ) senior vice president and general manager of intermodal. Filter was part of the panel, along with Phil Yeager, president and CEO of the Hub Group (NASDAQ: HUBG ), and Darren Field, president of intermodal of J.B. Hunt Transport Services (NASDAQ: JBHT ). Forecasting intermodal demand is challenging under existing conditions; in the near term, intermodal volume growth will largely depend on how consumer demand affects economic activity, panelists said.    Hub Group (HUBG) Lags Q1 Earnings and Revenue Estimates  2020/04/30 22:15:13 Zacks Investment Research
Hub Group (HUBG) delivered earnings and revenue surprises of -24.19% and -4.45%, respectively, for the quarter ended March 2020. Do the numbers hold clues to what lies ahead for the stock?
Trucking Stocks Are Doing About As Miserable As The Broader Stock Market  2020/03/12 20:55:15 Benzinga Feeds
Trucking stocks are falling at a rate generally in line with the broader decline in equities, with few companies sticking out as being particularly strong or weak. A quick look at some of the biggest names in the market shows that Heartland (NASDAQ: HTLD ) has performed better than other stocks among a selected group of key names, dropping 19.92% in the last month, according to data on Barchart. Meanwhile, Hub Group (NASDAQ: HUBG ), an intermodal carrier, is down 31.87% during that time. Since February 1, the S&P 500 is down a little less than 25%. Saia (NASDAQ: SAIA ) also has taken a big hit and that's not surprising; the less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier is viewed as being particularly exposed to industrial demand – particularly in the oil and gas sector. It's down 32.16% in the past month. Meanwhile, Old Dominion (NASDAQ: ODFL ) is down 24% and ArcBest (NASDAQ: ARCB ), is down 29%. Both are LTL carriers. Among other truckload carriers, Schneider (NYSE: SNDR ) in the last month has declined 25.45%, Knight Swift (NYSE: KNX ) is down 28.45% and Werner (NASDAQ: WERN ) has been one of the stronger performers with a drop of "only" 21.77%.
Forecasting Intermodal In 2020  2020/03/02 14:26:49 Benzinga Feeds
Late last year, I questioned whether intermodal still deserves to be considered a growth area within surface transportation, asserting that its growth status has been diminished, if not demolished. Of course, no judgement on that debate was ever expected to be rendered during the first two months of 2020 and questions regarding intermodal's secular growth remain. However, the latest public comments and data on intermodal from the Class I railroads, their intermodal partners and FreightWaves data paint a picture of an industry that will likely struggle to attract freight away from the trucking industry, at least until the much-anticipated capacity-driven improvement in the truckload industry kicks in. On its earnings call, J.B. Hunt described a domestic intermodal picture that caused me to wonder why a shipper would use intermodal in this market. J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT ) described domestic intermodal customers as demanding intermodal service levels that are essentially indistinguishable from trucking while still expecting a rate discount from trucking that is similar to what shippers have received historically (i.e., 10%-15%).

During earnings season, FreightWaves will be covering many companies across all modes, as well as shippers and retailers. Each week, we will recap the most interesting company earnings and any merger-and-acquisition activity from the preceding seven days. Take a look at the past week's finance recap: Earnings Logistics Echo Global Logistics (NASDAQ: ECHO ) Echo beats on revenue and earnings in ‘challenging freight market' Echo Global Logistics reported non-GAAP earnings per share of 26 cents, beating the Street's estimate of 16 cents; Echo's revenue of $531.7 million beat estimates of $522 million. After a year of a weak spot market and contract prices de-rating, Echo managed to protect its net revenue margins, which compressed by only 70 basis points year-over-year to 16.9%. Still, gross revenue fell 8.8% compared with the fourth quarter of 2018, and net revenue dropped 12.4% year-over-year. Although gross revenue fell by double digits, sales, general and administrative expenses were cut by only 5.3%, so they consumed a larger portion of net revenues.
