Timeline: Chinas tech crackdown 2021  2021/08/31 17:13:02 PingWest
"Crackdown" is definitely the buzzword of the year for China''s tech industry. After more than a decade of rapid growth, tech companies of all likes, social, education, gaming, you name it, began to face strict regulations from the central government, challenging the way they had paved for profit and prosperity. When looking back, 2021 could be the starting point of Beijing showing their understanding of technology, such as how private sectors can use it and what role the user should play in the process. Although it''s still early to see the outcome of the clampdown, which shows no hints to stop any time soon, it''s still worthy of having a review on how everything started. So let''s rewind the clock February 2 "Qinglang" Spring Festival Special Actions Type: Rectification Authority: Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) CAC started this campaign to "rectify the disorder such as pornographic, and vulgar information on the internet that affected people''s online experience". More than 2.08 million pieces of illegal information have been cleared; more than 7200 illegal live streamers have been banned; more than 2300 websites and apps have been shut down.

Futures Reverse Overnight Ramp After ECB Hints At Its Own Taper Stock markets set new record highs on Tuesday as investors ended August in a buoyant mood, confident that the Federal Reserves eventual tapering of QE would not knock asset prices anytime soon. S&P futures initially hit a new all time high after the underlying index notched its 12th all-time high in August and 53rd for the year, rising as high as 4,542 .... before dropping after the ECB''s Holzmann said the ECB should start its own tapering debate as the following Bloomberg headlines show. *HOLZMANN: ECB IN POSITION TO THINK ABOUT REDUCING PANDEMIC AID *HOLZMANN: ECB SHOULD DE-LINK GUIDANCE ON RATES, APP BOND-BUYING *HOLZMANN: APP DOESNT NEED SAME KIND OF FLEXIBILITY AS PEPP *HOLZMANN: WOULD ADVOCATE FOR SLOWDOWN OF PEPP PURCHASES IN 4Q Nasdaq futures also turned red while Dow Jones futures were modestly in the green at 7am. Oil also fell, along with the dollar. In U.S. premarket trading, Chinese gaming-related stocks listed in the U.S. recovered from Mondays slump, while Zoom dropped 11% after the video-conferencing companys guidance confirmed the concerns of bears over a slowdown in pandemic-fueled growth even as bullish analysts say this offers a buying opportunity with the companys long-term attractions intact.

Video Game Stocks Slide As Beijing Imposes 3-Hours-Per-Week Playtime-Quota  2021/08/30 14:15:00 Zero Hedge
Video Game Stocks Slide As Beijing Imposes 3-Hours-Per-Week Playtime-Quota Four weeks after Chinese regulators first denounced video games as "spiritual opium" and identified "video game addiction" as a widespread phenomenon distracting young people from their responsibilities, authorities on Monday announced they would restrict the hours during which Chinese minors are allowed to play. From here on out, gaming during the week will be banned . On Friday evenings, as well as during holidays and Saturdays and Sundays, gamers will only be allowed to play during a single hour between 2000 to 2100 local time. Already, Mondays new rules are impacting shares of China''s online gaming companies. Shares of a swath of companies, including Tencent, NetEase, Bilibili, Kingsoft Cloud, Huya and Sohu.com, tumbled during Asian trading. The new restrictions on video games are merely the latest installment in China''s efforts to curb the power of Big Tech. The crackdowns have already wiped more than one-trillion dollars off of the combined market cap of Chinese firms trading in China, the US and Hong Kong.

Esports and gaming have burst into the mainstream in recent years, transforming from a vibrant niche to a central form of entertainment around the world. While esports may have once stood for a subset of sports culture, it has grown into a full industry in its own right. That shift has been powered by championing from mainstream celebrities like Michael Jordan, Drake, and DJ Marshmello, an increasing amount of coverage from traditional outlets like ESPN, and, at least in part, the breakneck rise of Fortnite. As competitive gaming cements itself in the popular culture, global investors, brands, media outlets, and consumers are all paying attention. Total esports viewership is expected to grow at a 9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2019 and 2023, up from 454 million in 2019 to 646 million in 2023, per Insider Intelligence estimates.
