7 Transportation Stocks to Buy Before Summer 2023  2023/05/21 18:40:00 InvestorPlace
While it might be difficult to believe in a broader economic recovery with all the ugly headwinds, it’s possible that circumstances might improve, thus bolstering transportation stocks to buy. Fundamentally, the economy has proven resilient. In fact. despite the failure of three major regional banks, commercial activity keeps on chugging. In addition, the unemployment rate is extremely low, considering we just passed through a once-in-a-century pandemic. To be fair, rising layoffs – especially in the technology sphere – present concerns. However, at the moment, anyone that wants a job can get a job. That’s likely to lift transportation stocks to buy based on the need to move goods across the country (and the world). Again, it’s not a clear-cut pathway to the upside considering the wider difficulties. Still, if you believe in the recovery accelerating, these are the transportation stocks to buy.    Bloated Inventories Hit Walmart, Target And Other Retailers'' Profits, Trucking Demand  2022/05/23 00:30:00 Zero Hedge
Bloated Inventories Hit Walmart, Target And Other Retailers'' Profits, Trucking Demand By Mark Solomon of FreightWaves There’s little in retailing that Walmart and Target aren’t prepared to handle. So it was jarring that over a 24-hour period the two scions of the trade posted weak first-quarter profits that appeared to blindside management at both. Part of the bottom-line blowup was due to fuel, which soared to record highs following Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Part of it was due to margin pressures caused by an unfavorable sales mix as consumers shifted their buying from higher-margin goods like electronics to less profitable items like groceries. An extension of that was an overshoot of inventory-stocking activity, which came back to bite the retailers after waning concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic pushed more consumer buying toward services and “experiences” and away from goods. There’s little that retailers can do about fuel prices. It can be argued they should have expected the pandemic-driven buying spree from March 2020 until the end of 2021 to peter out and that they should have planned their inventory strategies accordingly.

7 Transportation Stocks to Avoid During These Trying Times  2022/05/06 10:49:28 InvestorPlace
Due to a critical divergence between consumer demand and shipment viability, transportation stocks are too risky for many investors. Knight-Swift Transportation ( KNX ): Down big this year, KNX may have difficulty repeating its otherwise outstanding financial performance in 2021. J.B. Hunt ( JBHT ): After pinging a very worrisome technical pattern, investors ought to head for the sidelines. Landstar System ( LSTR ): Like many transportation stocks, LSTR’s worrying technical pattern suggests investors should avoid the sector for now. United Parcel Service ( UPS ): With e-commerce sales as a percentage of total retail declining since 2020, UPS could be a wake-up call among transportation stocks. Union Pacific ( UNP ): Despite an okay performance given the circumstances, UNP stock has looked ugly of late. Danaos ( DAC ): Global supply chain disruptions will likely hurt the international shipping industry, boding poorly for DAC. TFI International ( TFII ): TFII is a benchmark for its North American operations and its hefty losses don’t spell great things ahead.

Peak Retail Season: Let The Chaos Commence  2021/08/23 22:00:00 Zero Hedge
Peak Retail Season: Let The Chaos Commence By Todd Maiden of Freight Waves , Freight markets have entered their second year of extreme dislocation, brought on by record consumer spending and a transportation network that doesnt have the labor or equipment to fill the need. Freight continues to roll in amid capacity shortages (Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves) A lack of openings on ocean sailing schedules, ships waiting longer to berth at the ports and delays unloading the freight once it has landed are some of the front-end issues facing the transportation industry. Once freight is routed inland, a chicken-and-egg scenario is playing out between container/chassis scarcity and slow rail service, with each causing further detriment to the other. Add in labor headwinds throughout all phases of the supply chain, notably difficulties finding truck drivers and warehouse workers, and the storm for freight delivery is near perfect. Inventory pull forward pushing inbound containers to new highs The National Retail Federation said earlier this month inbound twenty-foot equivalent units would again break a recently established monthly record .
