Companies across the US are offering workers perks for getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Here's the running list.  2021/05/14 22:29:28 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Companies across the US are joining in the largest-ever vaccination effort by offering employees perks if they receive the two-dose COVID-19 vaccine . Receiving the vaccine is voluntary, but most companies have strongly encouraged employees get the immunization when it's their turn . The two-dose vaccines, one from Pfizer and BioNtech and the other from Moderna, were emergency approved in the US in December. Since then, almost 34 million people have received one or more doses , according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many states and localities have begun moving from the first phase of vaccinating health care workers and elderly living in long-term care facilities to immunizing front-line workers. With that, some companies are giving workers two to three hours of paid time off per dose received, and others are offering a stipend for employees who voluntarily get the shots when it's their turn. Recently, Publix, Petco and AT&T joined the growing list.
Supplement startup Gem secures $10.5 million in venture capital by pitching itself as 'nutritional insurance'  2021/05/11 13:17:40 Business Insider
Summary List Placement There's more money going into supplements, diet advice, and products aimed at preventing health problems and big healthcare bills. Gem, which makes "whole-food bites" meant to replace of traditional supplement pills, raised $10.5 million in a seed-funding round, the company announced Tuesday. It raised its latest round in part by pitching its products as a preventive measure for consumers worried that their diets could lead to medical problems and higher costs associated with healthcare. Of course, the benefits of supplements are hotly debated. And a 2019 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found supplements did not extend life. Yet, the market for supplements is expected to surpass $36 billion this year, according to market research firm IBISWorld. The funding round was led by Pat Robinson, a managing director at CircleUp Growth Partners, and includes money from S2G and Pentland Ventures. While traditional supplements tend to come in pill or gummy form and contain highly refined forms of the advertised nutrients like vitamin D or iron, Gem says its bites derive those nutrients from more natural ingredients like turmeric or lichen.
TuSimple could jump 36% as the company leads the race in the $4 trillion autonomous trucking market, BofA says  2021/05/10 16:44:39 Business Insider
Summary List Placement T uSimple is "leading the autonomous revolution in trucking" and its stock could jump 36% over the next year, according to Bank of America. In a note to clients on Monday, analysts led by Ken Hoexter initiated coverage on TuSimple with a "buy" rating and a $51 price target. The price target represents a potential 36% jump in share prices from Friday's closing price of $37.29 per share. Hoexter and his team said that TuSimple is set to take a large chunk of the $4 trillion total addressable freight trucking market over the next decade. TuSimple hopes to operate an Autonomous Freight Network (AFN) across the US that will provide a comprehensive, turnkey solution to companies that want to do away with traditional trucking methods. The company has received 240 patents, has mapped more than 3,000 miles of high definition routes to date, and boasts over 5,700 orders for its level 4 autonomous semi-truck just four months after it began pre-sales. TuSimple also has investments and partnerships with the likes of UPS, Union Pacific, Canadian National, Werner, Schneider National, US Xpress, Kroger, McLane, Navistar, TRATON, NVidia, Cummins, and more.
Inside Amazon's and Walmart's bets to transform healthcare as the shopping rivals carve out a new battleground  2021/05/10 12:54:28 Business Insider
Summary List Placement On September 13, 2019, Walmart launched its inaugural primary-care clinic. Called "Walmart Health," it was a new chapter of the company's healthcare strategy. The idea was to provide good, cheap primary care in underserved populations and catch up to rivals like CVS. Less than two weeks later, CNBC's Christina Farr reported Amazon launched its own primary-care clinic, but this one was mostly virtual and, at that point, just available for Amazon's Seattle employees. Since then, Amazon Care has expanded to signing up other companies, promising to lower their healthcare costs. Two years later, it's clear that these shopping rivals' healthcare businesses are just getting started. In December, Insider reported that Amazon Care was gearing up for a national expansion that would serve other companies, not just Amazon's employees. It announced that expansion in March, and on Wednesday, Insider reported that the group had its first client, a fitness company recently acquired by Peloton.
Greylock and Baillie Gifford explain why they're betting on Nuro, the white-hot $5 billion self-driving startup  2021/05/07 11:15:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement With a growing war chest and an enviable collection of blue-chip partners, Nuro is one of the hottest startups in the autonomous-vehicle industry. Founded by two early members of Google's autonomous-vehicle project (which has since spun out as Waymo), the startup is developing self-driving delivery vehicles. Nuro aims to one day eliminate delivery fees while offering a wide range of products, including food, groceries, and prescriptions. Since its 2016 founding, the startup has run pilots with Walmart , CVS, and Domino's Pizza while raising $1.5 billion and earning a $5 billion valuation . Insider asked three of Nuro's investors — Baillie Gifford, Greylock Partners, and Toyota's Woven Capital subsidiary — why they took stakes in the startup. Here's what they said. A narrow focus on a big opportunity While some of Nuro's competitors in the autonomous-vehicle industry are building diverse business models that include a combination of ride-hailing, logistics, trucking, and deliveries, Nuro has kept its sights trained on deliveries since day one.

9 key people at companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Kroger who are making e-commerce advertising into a $17 billion market  2020/12/17 15:11:42 Business Insider
Summary List Placement The advertising industry has taken a big hit from the pandemic, but e-commerce companies are reaping the benefits. With people shopping more from the safety of home, advertising on e-commerce platforms has boomed during the coronavirus. E-commerce advertising is expected to rise 39% to $17.4 billion in the US this year and represent 12% of digital ad spend, according to eMarketer. Amazon has long dominated e-commerce advertising but a number of companies like Walgreens , Instacart, CVS, and Boxed are getting in on the action as retail's profit margins get thinner. They're pitching advertisers on data and audiences and rolling out new advertising platforms and features. "Retail media is having a moment right now — COVID has shifted a ton of sales online, and online sales are less profitable than in-store sales," said Jason Goldberg, chief commerce strategy officer at Publicis. "Retailers have to do everything they can do to improve profitability." Business Insider identified nine executives ranging from Amazon Advertising's Colleen Aubrey to Kroger's Cara Pratt who are leading this trend.
