Magna's CEO explains the little-known auto giant's gam plan for outpacing GM, Tesla, and Rivian in a post-pandemic industry (MGA) 2021/04/19 13:14:06 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Magna International is the biggest car company you've never heard of. The Canadian firm is the world's largest contract manufacturer of vehicles for other automakers, through its Magna Steyr arm in Austria, and it's also an important supplier of parts, as well as a leader in developing electrified engineering platforms and advanced driver-assist systems. Until recently, the $40 billion annual revenue firm and its 158,000 employees have operated behind the scenes. But as auto markets recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, Magna has been putting notable financial points on the board. In the past year, its stock has risen almost 160%, to a $90-plus level. For Swamy Kotagiri, who took over as CEO in January, it is satisfying that Magna is finally getting that kind of recognition. And, he told Insider, it's well deserved. "In 2020, despite COVID, we did what we had to, addressing our cost base," he said in an interview following a presentation at Magna's investor day this week. "We started seeing results as investors came back in the second half," he added.

Foxconn, Apple's biggest supplier, is the latest company to be impacted by the global shortage of microchips 2021/03/30 18:25:59 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Foxconn, one of Apple's biggest suppliers, warned Tuesday that the company expects a 10% decline in exports due to the global computer chip shortage. It's the latest of many signs that major electronic companies like Apple and Samsung might face some serious repercussions from a global shortage of semiconductor chips. The shortage was largely caused by the pandemic, and made worse by the Texas freeze. Increased demand for work-at-home devices, alongside manufacturing shutdowns have largely driven the global deficit. Computer chips are used in most major electronics, including anything from phone and gaming consoles to cars and computers. Unable to get their hands on enough of them, many automotive companies have already been forced to shut down plants and prioritize which models to produce due to the shortage. Apple may face similar challenges going forward. Though Foxconn's Chairman Liu Young-way said in February that the chip shortage will have a "limited impact" on the tech giant, he seems to have changed his tune.

LG expanding production capacity of automotive biz 2021/03/17 06:15:12 Sify.com
Seoul: LG Electronics is aggressively expanding the production capacity of its automotive business, a report showed on Tuesday, as the South Korean tech giant focuses on bolstering its future growth engine. Production capacity of LG's vehicle component solutions (VS) division, which manufactures telematics and audio-video-navigation components, reached 29.57 million units last year, up from 11.72 million units in 2017, according to the company's business report for 2020. The VS unit, established in 2013, has been beefing up its capacity, targeting advanced markets such as North America and Europe, with a focus on in-vehicle infotainment solutions. LG, mostly known for its home appliance products, said that sales from the infotainment sector stood at 3.6 trillion won ($3.1 billion) last year, up 12 per cent from a year ago, and accounted for more than 60 per cent of the VS division's total revenues, the Yonhap news agency reported. LG plans to run its automotive business on three main pillars -- infotainment, powertrain and auto lighting system.
The 'Apple Car' is actually being made by Henrik Fisker and Foxconn — and Apple has nothing to do with it (FSR, AAPL) 2021/02/25 10:58:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Even though the much-discussed Apple Car has staged something of a comeback in recent months, "Project Titan," as the undertaking has been code-named, remains the unimpressive concatenation of rumors it has always been . Meanwhile, one of Apple's most important manufacturing partners for its actual products, Taiwan's Foxconn, just announced a plan to develop an all-new electric vehicle with Fisker, Inc., a startup founded by serial automotive entrepreneur Henrik Fisker. Foxconn has been making noise in the auto industry since early 2020, when it announced a technology platform for vehicles. In 2021, it started joining Chinese carmakers — including Geely, owner of the Volvo brands — to collaborate on actual cars. The Fisker assignment has its own codename: "Project PEAR," for "Personal Electric Automotive Revolution," the company revealed in a statement. The vehicle should arrive in 2023, following the launch of Fisker's first effort, the Ocean SUV, slated for a late 2022 launch. "We created our company to disrupt every convention in the auto industry," Fisker said. "The creation of Project PEAR with Foxconn brings together two like-minded and complementary companies, each focused on creating new value in a traditional industry." Fisker moves forward with an 'asset-light' business model Fisker Inc. shares shot up more than 15% on the news, to about $19.
Apple’s parts supplier Foxconn teams up with Fisker to make electric vehicles 2021/02/24 17:07:55 The Sun Daily
BENGALURU: Electric-car maker Fisker Inc said it will work with Apple Inc supplier Foxconn to produce more than 250,000 vehicles a year beginning in late 2023, sending its shares up 18%. The deal, codenamed “Project PEAR” (Personal Electric Automotive Revolution), is looking at markets globally, including North America, Europe, China and India, Fisker said. Foxconn, Apple's main iPhone maker, has ramped up its interest in electric vehicles (EVs) over the past year or so, announcing deals with Chinese electric-car maker Byton and automakers Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and Stellantis NV's Fiat Chrysler unit. Sources have said Apple is targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle. Foxconn aims to provide components or services to 10% of the world's EVs by 2025 to 2027, Chairman Liu Young-way said in October. The Taiwan-based company's approach poses a major threat to established automakers that technology companies such as Apple and other non-traditional players could use contract assemblers as a shortcut to competing in the vehicle market. “A lot of auto suppliers and manufacturers are looking to get a piece of this explosive growth that’s ahead for the global electric vehcile market,“ said CFRA Research analyst Garrett Nelson, who has a “buy” rating on Fisker.
