Electric semi-trucks are ready to be deployed, but there aren’t near enough plugs to charge them  2023/02/04 12:55:00 Business Insider Nederlands
Truck manufacturer Daimler has a production capacity of around 2000 electric semi-trucks per year. It has only deployed around 100 of them. Lack of charging infrastructure is slowing down adoption across the industry. Electric semi-trucks are ready to go. The technology is there, manufacturers have capacity to produce them, and demand is only going to increase. Sure, the batteries are a bit heavier than truckers might like, but that''s not what''s slowing down the deployment of electric semi-trucks on US streets. The problem is that there''s still no way of charging big fleets of them, according to Daimler Truck North America president and CEO John O''Leary. Daimler, the leading US heavy-duty truck manufacturer, unveiled the Class 8 Freightliner eCascadia, its first fully electric semi-truck, in May of 2022. Its current production capacity is around 2000 trucks per year and it wouldn''t be hard to double that number to 4000, O''Leary said in a recent media briefing reported by Trucknews.com .

Paying smart meter owners to use less electricity may harm poor people’s health | Letters  2023/01/31 18:24:14 The Guardian
Steve Thomas fears some will boost their income at the expense of their health – using the money to eat instead of heat Smart meter owners will be grateful recipients of payments from National Grid if they reduce their electricity consumption at peak times during the current cold spell ( Households in Great Britain to be paid to use less electricity: how does it work?, 23 January ). While this might help keep the lights on, the risk is that low-income households who are already not consuming as much energy as they need to protect their welfare will take the opportunity to boost their income at the expense of their health – using the money to eat rather than heat. However, there is a potential stick to go with this carrot and that is the option of charging consumers more for electricity at peak times. This will only be possible when all consumers have smart meters. It is proving hard enough to convince consumers to install them without downsides becoming apparent. As with the current scheme, power demand will be reduced at peak time.
