Bad bank could help PSBs focus on growth: Experts  2021/02/09 01:54:40 Economic Times India
MUMBAI: A bad bank could be a boon for public sector banks saddled with a disproportionate share of the bad debt, which is restricting their ability to raise growth capital from the markets, experts tracking the banking sector said. The Union budget proposed an asset reconstruction company (ARC) to take over stressed debt from banks. However, with the government not allocating funds to capitalise the ARC, banks may be told to chip in to form the institution.“A separate bad bank, though late in the cycle, will ease up capital and management bandwidth to some extent and allow them to focus on growth, which in turn will arrest their market share loss to some extent,” said Anand Dama, analyst with Emkay Global. “Optically, a better balance sheet will also improve their prospects for raising capital.”In all, 9.7% of loans by public sector banks have turned bad at the end of September 2020, against 4.6% at private banks and 2.5% at foreign banks. According to experts, systemic corporate stress is in the range of Rs 5-6 lakh crore, out of which Rs 4 lakh crore is with public sector banks.Since large exposures have now aged and banks have improved their provision covers on such loans, they may not be willing to part with it at a highly discounted price.

Surging shipping rates pose new headwind for the economy  2021/01/15 08:12:45 Economic Times India
Shocks to supply chains are engulfing a wider swath of the global economy as the pandemic rages on, threatening to stifle Asia’s trade-led recovery just as soaring freight rates make it harder for businesses to weather another year like 2020.Shortages of consumer goods like paper towels and work-from-home gear early in the Covid-19 crisis have given way to parts shortfalls in one of the most globally integrated of industries: auto manufacturing.Volkswagen AG was forced cut production plans at the world’s largest car factory in Germany and warned supply constraints might spread globally, while Honda Motor Co. is reducing output at five North American factories as it struggles to procure chips used to make cars.“The supply-side bottlenecks seem to be more pronounced in the U.S. and Europe where supply delivery times are slowing again,” said Rob Subbaraman, global head of macro research at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Singapore. “This is negative for industrial production in the west and should result in a sharper drawdown in inventories and upward pressure on output prices.”Compounding the industrial imbalances are transport woes plaguing consumer and health-care sectors still dealing with a dearth of available shipping containers to move components and finished products out of China, Taiwan, South Korea and Asia’s other export powers.Nerijus Poskus, vice president for global ocean at San Francisco-based freight forwarder Flexport Inc., reckons the world needs the equivalent of 500,000 more 20-foot containers -- roughly enough to fill 25 of the largest ships in operation -- to satisfy the current demand.
