Up to 45 per cent of coronavirus infections may be asymptomatic: Study  2020/06/13 07:58:11 Economic Times India
LOS ANGELES: As much as 45 per cent of people infected by the novel coronavirus behind the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic never show symptoms of the disease, according to a review of studies which suggests that the virus may silently damage the bodies of these asymptotic individuals.Scientists, including Eric Topol from the Scripps Research Translational Institute in the US, analysed public datasets on asymptomatic infections of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.The findings, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, suggested that asymptomatic people may account for approximately 40 to 45 per cent of SARS-CoV-2 infections, playing a significant role in the spread of the disease.Based on the study, the scientists highlighted the need for expansive testing and contact tracing of infected individuals to mitigate the pandemic."The silent spread of the virus makes it all the more challenging to control," said Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and professor of Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research."Our review really highlights the importance of testing.

Here's how reporter Hayley Peterson exposes labor practices at the world's biggest (and most secretive) retailers  2020/05/08 19:28:53 Business Insider
Business Insider is taking you behind the scenes of our best stories with our series "The Inside Story." This week, BI deputy editor Olivia Oran spoke to chief correspondent Hayley Peterson who recently exposed how Whole Foods is using technology to track workers and stores to determine which locations are most likely to unionize. Peterson shares the challenges of reporting on labor practices at some of the world's largest (and most secretive) companies and the lessons she's learned from covering frontline retail workers. Business Insider chief correspondent Hayley Peterson has been covering big box retailers and grocers for the last seven years, after a prior stint reporting on the White House. Hayley is known for her hart-hitting investigations that expose labor issues at big retailers and grocers like Walmart and Amazon. In one of her most recent stories, she brought to light how Whole Foods uses a heat map tool to track potential unionization among its employees. The reporting provided a rare look into corporate labor-tracking activities, a common practice among large companies but one rarely discussed publicly.
