The business of finding a better job, with Career Karma CEO Ruben Harris 2022/02/01 15:25:00 The Verge
Photo Illustration by Grayson Blackmon / The Verge Turning the ‘Great Resignation’ into good business It’s an interesting time to talk to someone in the business of helping people get new jobs — we’re still fully in the middle of the pandemic-driven Great Resignation, and a record 4.5 million people quit their jobs in November 2021 , and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. But that’s exactly what Career Karma and CEO Ruben Harris are doing. Career Karma helps job-seekers identify potential new career paths, then matches them with coding boot camps and other training programs to help them on their way. Ruben and his team just raised $40 million in Series B funding for a total of $52 million, and it’s launching a live audio feature for job seekers to connect and talk about their career paths. So, of course, I wanted to talk to Ruben about what they plan to do with that infusion of cash and how exactly they plan to grow — and to talk about how Career Karma makes money, what he’s learned from his community about the future of the job market, and if he thinks the traditional 9 to 5 might be on the way out.

Amazon''s relationship with cloud partners like Snowflake and 2nd Watch is getting so tense that the internet giant launched an investigation into allegations of AWS salespeople stealing deals (AMZN, SNOW, AIG, CRM) 2021/08/05 11:07:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement When Amazon Web Services received a pricing inquiry from Farmers Insurance last year about its data warehousing service Redshift, the cloud giant reached out to its primary competitor: Snowflake. Farmers Insurance at the time was a mutual customer who used Snowflake''s data warehouse product on top of AWS''s cloud infrastructure. Given Snowflake''s dual role it competes with Redshift, but also sells AWS services AWS felt the need to be transparent about Farmers'' request. Snowflake aired its grievances, nonetheless. "Snowflake was not happy that AWS was discussing the competitive solution, but appreciated that AWS was upfront and honest about what was occurring with their shared customer," an AWS employee wrote in an internal report viewed by Insider. "Customer decided not to go with Redshift and continued with Snowflake." The episode is emblematic of the increasingly fine line Amazon must walk as it looks to grow its partner network, a group of more than 100,000 companies that sell and implement AWS products and services.
11 behind-the-scenes execs driving advertising M&A as private equity reshapes the red-hot industry 2021/08/05 11:00:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Ad industry mergers-and-acquisitions activity has bounced back over the past seven months after taking a big pandemic hit in 2020. M&A deals rose 46% year-over-year by volume in the first half of 2021 with a focus on digital advertising and martech, according to advisory firm Ciesco. Even excluding the Discovery TimeWarner mega-merger , the total value of these deals more than doubled, from $25.2 billion in the first half of 2020 to $55.1 billion in 2021. Ciesco CEO Chris Sahota said private equity firms led the way in the first half of 2021 with an 80% year-over-year increase in total deals. Gone are the days when ad giants like WPP, Publicis, Omnicom, and Dentsu closed 30 or more deals in a single year, Sahota said. Consulting giant Accenture has become the industry''s top buyer, acquiring 16 advertising businesses in 2019 and 12 in 2020. Upstart agencies like Jellyfish, S4 Capital, and You & Mr. Jones also regularly bid against PE firms. But the big names have each announced splashy acquisitions in recent months as ad spend returns to pre-pandemic levels and organic growth hits double digits.
