BrandPost: 5 Ways to Secure Data on Video Conferencing Platforms in a Remote Work Environment 2020/05/15 19:15:00 CSOonline
In recent days, organizations across a range of sectors and industries have begun requiring employees to work from home. Since online meetings now enable these newly-dispersed teams to collaborate, it makes sense that video conferencing tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Cisco Webex are seeing huge spikes in usage. However, the mass adoption of such video conferencing and collaboration tools raises new questions around security. Leaders may need to re-examine the tools and business processes that have been put in place to ensure security. These applications allow users to share files and record conversations, which means they could potentially become a source of data leakage. It’s essential for leaders to develop safeguards to protect any confidential information discussed on these platforms. This includes trade secrets, intellectual property (IP), and data subject to regulatory compliance concerns. To read this article in full, please click here

BrandPost: Breaking the Narrative: 3 Steps to Democratize Security 2020/04/17 17:07:00 CSOonline
“We are trying to secure democratized technology with an unsustainable security model; it’s time to break it and put it back together,” said Wendy Nather, Head of Advisory CISOs for Cisco, in her keynote address at this year’s RSA Conference. It’s evident that the old ways of building security no longer work, she says. Consider: Training and security exercises tell individuals not to click malicious links, yet the individuals still do. Maybe that’s because, Nather proposes, it’s unreasonable to expect users to refrain from using the Internet the way it’s designed -- where it’s all about clicking. It would make more sense to build in security so that they could safely click anything. We’re seeing the same security vulnerabilities and mistakes that were designed into web servers years ago now being designed into mobile systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), because different populations are doing the development and haven’t had a chance to learn from past experience. Security is often “us versus them” or security professionals against users, perpetuating a culture of exclusivity rather than collaborative security.

The cofounder of BlueJeans says the the coronavirus crisis accelerated its $500 million acquisition by Verizon, and predicts there's more 'consolidation of video platforms' to come (VZ) 2020/04/16 20:17:00 Business Insider
On Thursday morning, Verizon announced its intent to acquire videoconferencing company BlueJeans in a deal said to be valued at about $500 million. BlueJeans cofounder Krish Ramakrishnan, executive chairman, said his company had been exploring a merger with Verizon when the coronavirus crisis hit. That convinced the two companies to work faster on the merger. " Imagine a transaction of this nature just done on video when everybody is working from home," Ramakrishnan told Business Insider. "Even the due diligence was done from home. Never happened. We got it done last night at 12:10 AM." Verizon's acquisition of BlueJeans combines a major telecommunications network with one of the most widely-used video conferencing platforms — even as it faces competiton from Microsoft, Cisco, and upstarts like Zoom. Ramakrishan predicts a consolidation in the videoconferencing space as the sudden pivot to a remote workforce highlights the importance of the technology. Click here for more BI Prime stories.
