Loop Industries and Suez Partner to Build First ‘Infinite Loop’ Facility  2020/09/11 13:20:00 PlasticsToday
Located in Europe, the site will be the largest PET recycling facility in the world, with the potential to produce the equivalent of approximately 4.2 billion food-grade beverage bottles from 100% recycled and infinitely recyclable PET annually.
Plans unveiled for 'world's biggest' recycling facility in bid to meet soaring European demand  2020/09/10 23:01:18 BusinessGreen
Loop Industries and SUEZ reveal plans to build giant plastic recycling facility, as pressure grows for sector to boost capacity across Europe A giant recycling plant capable of producing infinitely-recyclable, virgin-quality plastic is being planned to cater for soaring European demand for recycled materials, it has been announced. The plant, which would be the largest in the world to date, would be dedicated to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastic and would boast the potential to produce the equivalent of approximately 4.2 billion food grade beverage bottles made of 100 per cent recycled and infinitely recyclable PET plastic annually. The project is being led by Loop Industries, in partnership with resource management consultants SUEZ, and will be the first of a new generation of 'Infinite Loop' recycling facilities. A final site will be agreed in mid-2021 with commissioning of the facility slated for 2023. When fully operational, Infinite Loop systems aims to save 180,000 tons of CO2 annually, compared with traditional virgin PET production methods.

Evian's Shweta Harit on circularity, Covid-19, and 'big, hairy' goals  2020/06/09 23:01:35 BusinessGreen
Evian's vice-president of brand Shweta Harit talks to BusinessGreen about the French water company's sustainability ambitions, in particular a pledge to use 100 per cent recycled bottles by 2025. While achieving a cirular economy is an important goal for all brands, it is particularly pertinent for Evian, where circularity has long been a cornerstone of the brand, says Shweta Harit, global brand vice-president of the French water company. "Think about it - every year we get Evian water, and then it goes back into a cycle again, and then we get the water the following year," she tells BusinessGreen in an interview last month from her Paris apartment. "The snowfall of this year takes 15 years to become Evian water. The concept of circularity and cycle has long been a part of the brand." While it remains to be seen whether Evian's reliance on alpine water cycles will give it an advantage when it comes to achieving its corporate goal of becoming a fully circular business by 2025, there is no doubt that the task ahead is onerous.
Earth Day 2020: How Chemical Recycling Is Building Sustainable Solutions  2020/04/20 20:40:07 PlasticsToday
Chemical recycling, aka “advanced recycling,” provides a way to rid the world of difficult-to-recycle plastics and produce many valuable end products. According to information supplied by Eastman Chemical (Kingsport, TN), chemical recycling alters the physical form of used plastics, either by dissolving the plastics with chemicals or using heat to break down polymers into their original components (monomers), resulting in a purified form of plastic or chemical products and feedstocks used to create new plastics, fuels, or other products. A report from McKinsey & Co., “How Plastic Waste Recycling Could Transform the Chemical Industry,” noted that chemical recycling could be a viable method for recycling in “emerging-market countries” that lack the infrastructure for waste collection and management, including sorting trash into different waste streams. “Monomer recycling, although it is inherently restricted in its application to condensation-type polymers such as PET and polyamide, has the potential to generate some of the highest (11.2%) plastics recycling profitability levels,” said the report. “This is because monomer recycling can avoid the capital investments needed for steam crackers and aromatics plants, as well as the high-capital-cost plants required to make PET and polyamide intermediaries.” In February 2020, less than a year after Eastman launched its innovative chemical recycling technologies to accelerate the circular economy, Eastman received a sustainability innovation award from the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) for its carbon renewal technology, a “game-changer” for recycling that can make a substantial impact on the global waste crisis, said Eastman.
