Online grocery startup Instacart has rolled out a new tool that lets brands and agencies buy ads through a self-serve platform. The move signals that Instacart is beefing up its advertising business to compete with Walmart and Amazon. The coronavirus has increased Instacart's popularity with more people buying groceries online but some retailers may not want to continue to work with Instacart as they build out their own advertising businesses. Click here for more BI Prime stories . Grocery delivery service Instacart is looking to take a page from Amazon and Walmart's advertising business. The company has launched a self-serve ad platform that grocery brands can use to promote their products on Instacart's website and app. Brands like Procter & Gamble, Pepsico, and Kraft Heinz have tested it in recent months to buy and manage ad campaigns, and the tool is now available to all advertisers. Instacart's user base has soared during the coronavirus as more people shop for groceries online. In April, Instacart reported that customer orders were up 300% year-over-year, has hired hundreds of thousands of new workers and rolled out new features to keep up with demand.

In staff memos, S4 Capital CEO Martin Sorrell said the coronavirus pandemic is unlike any crisis since World War II and predicted an acceleration in digital trends that have taken a toll on advertising agencies. He said tech clients such as Google have been relatively unscathed but others are asking agencies to extend payment terms, raising concerns that they might not pay. Sorrell said he thinks S4 has an opportunity to pick off talent and business from distressed agencies and acquire some of those companies in the coming months.
