The CEO of prominent IT automation startup Puppet says that the firm's 2 new board members will help it prepare for an IPO as soon as 2021 2020/11/11 11:00:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement Puppet is bringing on two new board members as the IT automation company prepares for an initial public offering as early as 2021, CEO Yvonne Wassenaar told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. Topa Insurance Group CEO Michael Day and chief digital information officer at biotech firm CSL Behring, Mark Hill, are both joining the startup's board of directors as independent members. Their appointment sets the stage for an IPO as early as late 2021, according to Wassenaar. Puppet has already begun conversations with potential banking partners, and its timeline would make it the first Portland-based company to have a large IPO since 2004, according to The Oregonian . "Despite what people say it is different being a private company versus being a public company," she said. "I would rather be doubly sure that we've dotted all the I's and crossed all the T's before we take that step. So right now, we're really looking at the next 12-to-18 months." Puppet is one of the key players in the burgeoning DevOps industry , which aims to shorten development timelines for technologists and allow for more continual updates to applications.

Illiquidity & Creative Destruction 2020/11/06 17:04:11 Zero Hedge
Illiquidity & Creative Destruction Tyler Durden Fri, 11/06/2020 - 12:04 Authored by Louis-Vincent Gave via Evergreen Gavekal blog, “Loading up companies with borrowing at a time of peak economic uncertainty allows private equity groups to de-risk their own exposure by taking cash out of the business. But the higher risk of defaults has consequences for stakeholders beyond the private equity owners.” – Financial Times, September 2020 INTRODUCTION Winter came a few months early last week, as Snowflake (SNOW) had a highly successful Initial Public Offering, rising over 111% from its offering price in its first day of trading to a cool market cap of $67.4B. With eight rounds under its parka belt prior to last Wednesday’s IPO, the mountain-top ascent was a highpoint for a number of private investors, some of whom invested in the company as early as 2012. Of course, not all private investments turn out so successfully, but the rapid growth story underscores an important phenomenon that is the subject of this week’s newsletter from Louis-Vincent Gave: the willingness to trade liquidity for the potential of income or growth.
Copperstate Farms CEO Explains Why Being A SSO In Cannabis Is A Strategy That Works 2020/11/05 15:47:55 Benzinga
This special presentation from Copperstate Farms comes from Benzinga’s Virtual Cannabis Capital Conference that took place on October 15. Click here for more coverage of this event with presentations from some of the top CEOs, investors and lenders in the cannabis space. In 1998, a young Canadian found himself a lottery winner. After collecting his jackpot, the man decided to use his winnings to create a hydroponic greenhouse in the best location in North America. In his quest to find the ideal location, he worked with a few University professors who determined Snowflake, Arizona, to be one of the best places for a greenhouse. Contrary to its name, the city of Snowflake is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. It has an elevation of 5,000 ft. from sea level which makes the number of joules of sunlight it receives quite intense and ideal for growing and cultivating cannabis. As a result, the cannabis plants are powered by the sun for about 9-10 months of the year. The city also has an outstanding and clean source of water to draw from.
13 Hot Upcoming IPOs to Watch For in 2020 and 2021 2020/11/03 21:11:00 Kiplinger Washington Editors
The initial public offering (IPO) market overcame a lightning-quick bear market in 2020 to bounce back to levels not seen since the dot-com boom. But there's still a laundry list of upcoming IPOs for 2020, and especially 2021, as a host of companies plan on tapping Wall Street for much-needed capital. Some of the year's highlights? Business-to-business database operator ZoomInfo ( ZI ) helped open the floodgates in June with its $8.2 billion IPO. Game engine developer Unity ( U ) went public in September at a $13.7 billion valuation. Cloud infrastructure firm Snowflake ( SNOW ) hit the markets around the same time, marking the largest-ever software IPO at a valuation of $33.2 billion – an offering that got the attention of Warren Buffett . You can thank a rapid snap-back rally and rock-bottom interest rates for rejuvenating Wall Street's wheeling and dealing. But there are other factors at play: The mega-trend of digital transformation continues to thrust more companies into the public markets.

A data analytics startup founded by former Facebook engineers just raised $40 million after overcoming a 'lull' at the beginning of the pandemic 2020/10/27 12:00:00 Business Insider
Summary List Placement The search and analytics startup Rockset was in the midst of growing a new sales unit earlier this year when the pandemic struck. Customers were suddenly hesitant to make new purchasing decisions and the firm saw a "lull" in business from March until May, according to cofounder and CEO Venkat Venkataramani. But as companies settled into remote work, Rockset's software for real-time data processing began gaining traction. "If [the lull] lasted six months, we would be in much more of a world of trouble — we were fortunate that that didn't happen," Venkataramani said. "All of our customers started to go back to 'getting-things-done mode' instead of 'wait-and-see mode.'" On Tuesday Rockset announced a $40 million Series B funding round led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Greylock (the firm declined to disclose its valuation). Rockset has now raised $61.5 million in total, and plans to use the new funding to invest in marketing and sales, as well as double its employee count. "We're very happy to see in the last quarter a lot of customers wanting to build with Rockset and invest in the product," Venkataramani told Business Insider. "The product has gotten leaps-and-bounds better.
