Funding the Next Generation of Efficient, Electric, Grid-Interactive Communities 2020/10/19 12:33:00 Green Technology Media
U.S. homes and commercial buildings consume roughly two-fifths of the country’s overall energy, three-fourths of all electricity, and account for most of the peak electricity demand that drives generation and power grid infrastructure costs. Each of these statistics points to different solutions for reducing buildings’ carbon footprint. Shifting heating from fossil fuels to electricity can cut direct emissions. More efficient building design, materials, and appliances can cut electricity consumption. And managing electricity use to match grid needs can help utilities control the costliest part of decarbonizing their systems — reducing reliance on dispatchable fossil-fueled power. The Department of Energy’s $65 million funding for “connected communities” projects announced last week is focused on all three parts of this equation. It builds on scores of projects across the country combining high efficiency, electrification, and distributed energy resources (DERs) like rooftop or community solar, battery and thermal energy storage, and electric vehicle charging.

So, What Exactly Are Small Modular Nuclear Reactors? 2020/09/09 16:58:00 Green Technology Media
What’s the problem with nuclear energy? At a time when lawmakers are scratching their heads over how to decarbonize national energy systems, nuclear is sitting on a technology that is low-carbon, mature and, despite the odd meltdown, relatively safe . Yet across North America and Europe, nuclear can’t seem to get a look-in. More than half of the 48 new reactors that the World Nuclear Association (WNA) lists as being built worldwide are in just four countries: China, India, the United Arab Emirates and Russia. China alone accounts for a quarter of the total. Meanwhile in the U.S., the world’s top generator of nuclear power, only two new reactors are currently under construction — and Southern Company’s Plant Vogtle expansion is massively overdue and over budget. It’s the same story in France, which has a higher proportion of nuclear energy on the grid than any other country in the world. French developer EDF was hoping for its sole new-build project to go live last year , along with another reactor it is building in Finland.
