Explore this rare 18th-century French trunk that likely held the intimate world of Marie Antoinette. Bearing the tantalizing inscription "Garde‑robe de la reine (Wardrobe of the Queen)," this functional piece of history was used to transport garments, linens, and intimate items for travels between residences, including the Palace of Fontainebleau, the Palace of Compiègne, as well Marly and Choisy. These trunks formed part of the royal baggage train. Because of heavy use, surviving examples are exceedingly rare.
This trunk will be on offer as part of the Handbags and Trunks Auction happening 23 June in New York.
