Some paintings are admired. Others become part of a family's history. For more than 140 years, this extraordinary J.M.W. Turner remained in the collection of one family, passing through generations while quietly preserving the same atmosphere that first captivated its nineteenth-century owner. So compelling was the work that a young collector interrupted his honeymoon to travel to London and bid for it at auction, beginning a relationship that would endure for well over a century. Painted during Turner's time in Rome, the canvas captures the Eternal City with astonishing immediacy. Nearly two hundred years later, its light still shimmers, its air still seems to move, and the waters of the Tiber appear close enough to feel. Alongside a deeply personal story of inheritance, memory, and collecting, the painting offers a rare encounter with one of the greatest artists of the Romantic era at the height of his powers.
