Painted in 1983 as one of a suite of twelve monumental canvases — including Hollywood Africans, now at the Whitney — the work is a cyclone of skulls, crowns, and commerce-obsessed text, thundering with the artist's signature declaration: "Museum Security." Exhibited at the Fondation Beyeler, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and most recently in Seoul, where it graced the cover of the exhibition catalogue, the painting has been requested for a 2027 show at the Palazzo Strozzi in Milan. As Fondation Beyeler director Sam Keller once said of it, the work is "a modern-day 'writing on the wall'... and one of the great masterpieces of contemporary art."
