Bidders battled it out for Willem de Kooning's spectacular Untitled, a six-foot abstraction from 1970, achieving $8.8M by the time the hammer went down. Painted after de Kooning's retreat from Manhattan to the Hamptons, the work fuses the human form with the sand, sea, and light of Long Island — lucious strokes of turquoise, pink, and celadon crashing and colliding across the canvas. The painting hails from the collection of legendary dealer Robert Mnuchin and was exhibited internationally, including in the artist's historic 2005–06 retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Basel. As critic David Sylvester wrote, de Kooning's paintings of this decade are "crystallizations of the experience and amazement of having body and mind dissolve into another who is all delight."
