What does it mean to build a painting? For František Kupka, one of the pioneers of modern abstract art, the answer lay somewhere between architecture, science and the spiritual world. His compositions evolved over years, layer by layer, as he moved away from literal representation towards something more elusive: a way of expressing what we see, what we feel, and what language cannot quite capture. In Espace non-descriptif, vivid purples and blues gather around a brilliant white void, creating a composition that seems to shift between structure and movement, presence and absence. The result is a striking meditation on colour, form and the possibilities of abstraction. Alongside contemporaries Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky, Kupka helped redefine what painting could be, opening up a new way of seeing the world. This captivating piece is a highlight of the Modernités auction taking place at Sotheby’s Paris on 23 October, presented by CELINE.
