Hundreds of Intel engineers from 20 locations around the world visited schools to do hands-on STEM activities with elementary and middle school children to celebrate Engineers Week 2026. This week the Intel Foundation has awarded Project Lead The Way (PLTW) a transformative $3 million grant to create new middle and high school learning experiences that broaden access to semiconductor science and advanced manufacturing education nationwide.
The initiative is expected to reach 140,000 students and train 1,100 teachers over three years, with the long-term potential to engage nearly 1.5 million students annually across PLTW’s network. This collaboration introduces MicroChipsters™ Lab, a 10-hour, in-class curriculum for PLTW middle and high school students that brings semiconductor science to life. Students explore chip fabrication, rare earth materials, and real-world technician roles—hands-on learning experiences that young STEM learners typically don’t encounter in school. At the high-school level, the award supports PLTW’s new Advanced Manufacturing course, which immerses students in semiconductor fabrication concepts, robotics, automation, digital simulation, Industry 4.0 systems, and AI-assisted engineering tools.
The course equips students with real-world skills aligned to modern semiconductor and advanced manufacturing careers. The award will also fund school grants for the school years between 2025 - 2028, supporting PLTW Gateway and Engineering program implementations in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, and Ohio. To date, 22 schools across these four states have received PLTW Engineering and PLTW Gateway program grants. Additional districts will be supported in subsequent years as PLTW continues to broaden its STEM course offerings and help ensure that communities gain access to robust engineering pathways and new opportunities across the semiconductor ecosystem. For decades, the Intel Foundation, Intel Corporation’s philanthropic organization, has championed K–12 and higher‑education STEM opportunities to ensure the future is shaped by innovators from every community.
With this investment, the Intel Foundation is not only broadening access to STEM education but also inspiring the next generation of chipmakers and strengthening the talent pipeline essential to America’s technological future.
