Lightning is often the first warning sign of severe weather, and seeing it early could help save lives. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), developed by Lockheed Martin and flying aboard NOAA’s GOES-R series satellites, continuously tracks every lightning flash across the Western Hemisphere. Unlike ground-based radar, GLM provides minute-by-minute lightning data over oceans, remote regions and sparsely monitored areas. By detecting changes in lightning activity, GLM helps forecasters identify intensifying storms sooner, extending warning lead times by up to 30 minutes for hurricanes, tornado-producing thunderstorms and other severe weather events.
