This demo shows how 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 and 3M™ Vinyl Tape 471 perform under sulfuric acid exposure. Designed for teams working with anodizing, paint stripping, electroplating, chemical processing, masking, and surface protection applications. Request a sample: https://s.3m.com/xxmjmbfy Aggressive chemicals are often used in modern manufacturing to create durable or decorative surfaces, or to prepare surfaces for the next process step. In this demo, three tapes are compared for chemical resistance on glass surfaces. Demo summary • 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992, 3M™ Vinyl Tape 471, and 3M™ Masking Tape 2214 are applied to separate glass plates. • A 50% concentrated sulfuric acid solution is applied along the top edge of each tape. • After 10 minutes of exposure, each tape is inspected to check whether the acid penetrated the backing or affected the protected glass surface. Product highlights • 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 provides excellent thermal, abrasion, and chemical resistance while maintaining flexibility. • 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 is designed to reduce failure due to softening, oozing, and adhesive transfer. • 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 removes cleanly from many surfaces and leaves a sharp paint line. • 3M™ Vinyl Tape 471 is shown in this demo as a surface protection tape for chemical exposure comparison. • Both 3M engineered industrial tapes are compared against 3M™ Masking Tape 2214 in the demonstrated setup. Observed results • After 10 minutes, the sulfuric acid solution remains on top of the edges of 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 and 3M™ Vinyl Tape 471. • The glass surface under 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 remains protected, with no visible penetration in the demonstrated setup. • The glass surface under 3M™ Vinyl Tape 471 also remains protected, with no visible penetration in the demonstrated setup. • 3M™ Masking Tape 2214 allows the acid solution to penetrate the tape perimeter, and the tape backing begins to lift from the glass surface. Why it matters • Chemical resistant tape can help protect surfaces during anodizing, paint stripping, electroplating, and other aggressive chemical processes. • Strong chemical resistance can reduce the risk of unwanted surface exposure during manufacturing steps. • Surface protection can support cleaner downstream processing and reduce rework. • Tape selection matters when masking or protecting areas exposed to harsh chemicals. • Visible tape placement can help operators apply and remove masking materials more accurately.
