Jasmine, aged 16, has juvenile psoriatic arthritis (JPsA), a form of arthritis in children and adolsecents; it is a type of juvenile idiopathric arthritis (JIA), which is a range of arthritic diseases in children and teenagers that have no known cause. Like all forms of JIA, JPsA is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body’s immune system is overactive; it incorrectly attacks normal cells and causes unwanted inflammation. In JPsA, the overactive immune system causes joints to become swollen and painful. JIA is the most common childhood rheumatic disease, affecting approximately 2 million children worldwide. Here, Jasmine discusses with her doctor, Prof. Athimalalpet Ramanan, what is it like to have JPsA and the affect it has on her life. ©2021 Novartis AG
