For Season 6 of Science Will Win, we’re doing something new. Alongside the weekly audio episodes, we’re also sharing full-length conversations between host Dr. Raven Baxter – a molecular biologist and science educator – and one of her guests, giving you more of the story, more context, and more opportunities to connect beyond the audio episode. This season explores how our understanding of cancer is evolving and how the science community is working together to meet today’s latest challenges. When Bob Riter discovered a small lump on his chest at age 40, breast cancer wasn’t even on his list of possibilities. In 1996, male breast cancer was rarely discussed, and like many people, Bob had never imagined the diagnosis could apply to him. In this video episode, Raven sits down with Bob to talk about his unexpected diagnosis while working as a college professor, and the emotional reality of life after treatment. While many people see the end of cancer treatment as a clear finish line, Bob explains why the transition back to “normal life” can be one of the hardest parts of the journey. But this isn’t Bob’s only experience with cancer. At 65, Bob was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. Bob shares how his diagnoses reshaped his career and perspective on time, ultimately leading to decades of work in cancer advocacy and patient support. Along the way, he discusses the unique challenges men face with breast cancer awareness, the importance of access to reliable health information, and how connecting patients with researchers can transform the future of cancer care. Today, Bob continues to bridge the gap between the cancer community and scientific research, helping patients find trusted information while reminding researchers of the human stories behind the data.
