Five rounds. Fired in rapid succession. And every one of them captured. When a homicide occurred in a Lancaster, SC neighborhood, officers were already responding to a ShotSpotter alert before anyone called 911. But the alert didn't just speed up response. It handed prosecutors something they rarely get in a shooting case: the actual sound of the crime. The audio captured by ShotSpotter -- five shots, rapid-fire -- was turned over to the prosecutor's office as forensic evidence. Prosecutors could contrast the sequence against the defense's account. They could play it for a jury. As Captain Nelson Bowling put it, a video would always be better. But having the actual audio of gunshots in a homicide case is something that moves people.
