One of the things that excites Divesh Srivastava most about his work is the role his team has played in helping to ensure AT&T promotes the responsible use of data and AI. “What excites me a lot is the area of responsible data science and making sure people use data in very responsible ways to benefit society and not to do things that might even inadvertently cause significant harm to the people, to our customers, to our employees, and figuring out how can we do things that protect privacy and do it in a way such that even the use of machine learning algorithms are not biased against people. This is some of my recent work, and this is something that I'm very proud of,” Divesh said. AT&T has always stressed the importance of responsible data science and AI, which includes creating a privacy policy that ensures “we don't use customers’ private information without their consent,” he said. For his career achievements and work not only for AT&T, but also the industry, Divesh this year was named an AT&T Fellow, a prestigious honor awarded to employees who make notable scientific and technical achievements that have significant impact to AT&T’s business. Divesh has not only made significant impacts on AT&T’s business but the industry as a whole. He has published over 400 papers, and been invited to speak externally around the world over 100 times. From Rome, Italy to Sydney, Australia and even Tartu, Estonia he is a rock star everywhere he travels! Divesh has been granted over 100 patents in the areas of data quality, blockchain, data integration, data privacy, query optimization, and many others! Ten years ago he wrote a book on big data integration that is still in use today at many universities. One particularly unique global contribution Divesh has contributed to the data community is something called “PrivBayes.” He created this approach that efficiently generates synthetic data with privacy guarantees that preserves significant correlations present in real-world data, which is used by many companies and open-source tools.
