Working mothers in Nairobi’s urban slums have to rely on daycare services with poor sanitation and terrible conditions, but it’s all they can afford. Kidigo is helping to change that. The social enterprise co-founded by Sabrina Natasha Habib empowers local women (mamapreneurs) to set up their own childcare programmes and centres. Kidigo provides training, mentorship and tools to help them improve the quality of care, as well as the profitability of the centres so they can earn a dignified livelihood. So far, Kidigo has provided 1 million hours of quality childcare in Nairobi’s informal settlements. The Young Entrepreneurs Awards programme is delivered by Unilever in partnership with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). It rewards inspirational entrepreneurs aged 30 and under who have developed a product, service or application that helps make sustainable living commonplace.
